Hi Jimmy,
There are TWO solenoids operated by the start button on the Savage. The first is the starter solenoid (under the seat) which is found on all electric start bikes (sometimes called the starter relay). The second is the automatic decompression solenoid (under the tank)and are very rare.
From your description, I'm guessing the click you hear is the decompression solenoid, and it's the starter solenoid that's working intermittantly.
I would start by taking the seat off and checking the wiring to the starter solenoid. As it's an intermittant problem, the chances are it's something simple like a bad connection. I had a similar problem on a Honda, and I was able to dismantle the starter solenoid and clean it out.

I hope this points you in the right direction.

I see from your e mail address you like Star Trek. I love it. I'm 44 now and I used to watch Captain Kirk when I was at school. Captain Pichard is great. I'm glad Janeway got home. And I don't know what to make of Enterprise. Perhaps it will grow on me with time. And I never did get to like Deep Space Nine.
But I love Councillor Troy.

Happy Savage riding.
